Most Ethiopian coffees are traditionally processed at centralized washing stations, where cherries from many smallholders are combined and marketed by village or station name rather than by individual producer. In contrast, this lot is sourced entirely from a single farm, offering rare producer-level traceability and a clearer expression of origin.
This lot comes by way of Bekele Kachara, a seasoned farmer with over 20 years of experience, based near the village of Murago in Ethiopia’s Bensa region. Bekele manages a 4.5-hectare farm alongside his wife and children, cultivating JARC landraces such as 74110, 74112, and 74158, producing around 70 bags of green coffee annually, with close attention paid to quality at every stage.
Bekele relies on organic compost to nourish his trees and maintains shaded drying racks to slow the drying process and protect the cherries. Harvesting is done selectively, with each cherry carefully inspected to ensure optimal ripeness. Drying and sorting are closely monitored to preserve clarity and consistency. While not formally certified organic, his practices are environmentally responsible and rooted in long-term soil health.
As a single-producer lot, this coffee reflects Bekele’s hands-on approach, farming philosophy, and local environment − offering a more personal and transparent expression of Ethiopian coffee beyond regional averages.
