In the heart of Kenya's Central Highlands, where the cool climate and rich volcanic soils of Nyeri County create ideal conditions for specialty coffee production, the Kangocho Factory has established itself as a producer of exceptional washed coffees. Operated by the Gikanda Farmers Cooperative Society (who also operate the Gichathaini and Ndaroini factories), this facility serves 3,500 smallholder farmers who collectively cultivate some of Kenya's most vibrant and distinctive coffees.
The factory's fully washed SL28 and SL34 lots represent the quintessential characteristics of Nyeri's terroir. These heirloom varieties, developed specifically for Kenya's growing conditions, thrive in the region's high altitudes between 1,600 and 1,800 meters above sea level. SL28, known for its drought resistance and excellent cup quality, and SL34, prized for its productivity and flavor potential, form the backbone of Kangocho's premium offerings.
Processing at Kangocho follows the meticulous Kenyan washed method that has made the country's coffees famous worldwide. The journey begins with rigorous cherry selection, where only fully ripe fruit is accepted and floaters are systematically removed. After pulping, the coffee undergoes a carefully controlled fermentation process - first underwater for 24 to 36 hours, followed by a second fermentation in clean water. This dual-phase approach develops the coffee's signature brightness while maintaining clarity.
Drying occurs on raised beds over 7 to 10 days, with constant attention to ensure even moisture reduction down to the optimal 10-12% content. The final step involves precise milling and grading, with beans typically sorted into the prized AA and AB size categories that command premium prices in international markets.
What sets Kangocho apart is not just its ideal growing conditions and careful processing, but the cooperative structure that supports its farmers. Gikanda FCS provides critical infrastructure and training while ensuring fair returns to members. This model has created a virtuous cycle where quality improvements lead to better prices, which in turn fund further investments in production quality and community development.
The combination of Nyeri's unique microclimate, the genetic potential of SL varieties, and Kangocho's exacting processing standards results in coffees that showcase why Kenyan beans remain among the world's most sought-after. From the fertile red soils to the skilled hands that nurture each lot through processing, Kangocho's washed SL28 and SL34 represent a perfect storm of natural advantages and human expertise coming together to create something extraordinary.
