Impressed by the quality of coffee on the national market, Juan Peña and his team at CafExporto decided to help smallholders in Chito, Zamora-Chinchipe secure better prices internationally. These farms, located 1,600 masl, benefit from a favorable climate and fertile land, offering significant potential for high-quality coffee cultivation. Juan believed it would be a loss if these farmers gave up their farms due to economic pressures.

Recognizing this potential, Juan and his team have been working closely with about 40 local farmers. Their efforts include providing agronomic advice, technical support, and high-quality seeds to develop blends that highlight the region's strengths. One result of these collaborative efforts is the one we are sharing here. Termed simply as "Southern Star #5”, this fully washed lot features a mix of both Catuai and the prized Typica Mejorado variety.

"Southern Star #5" exemplifies the work and dedication of Juan, his team, and the farmers they support. This blend aims to share the unique flavors and potential of Chito’s coffee with a wider audience, showcasing the region’s capabilities and the collaborative efforts behind its production. This approach not only highlights the unique flavors of the region but also ensures that the farmers receive the support and recognition they deserve, helping to improve their livelihoods and promote sustainable coffee farming practices.

In the cup, you can expect lively and juicy citric acidity along with notes of grapefruit and white nectarines, before finishing off with a very satisfying chocolate sweetness with a hint of raisins peeking through.
